Standard 1 thi 12 Schools, colleges reopen in Gujarat after over 9 months

Schools, colleges reopen in Gujarat after over 9 months

Schools and colleges all across the state reopened on Monday, after being shut down for more than nine months due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The government has decided to reopen educational institutions in the state in a staggered manner.

In the case of schools, only Class X and Class XII students will resume in the initial phase, for colleges only final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students will be allowed on the campus.

Colleges are likely to see greater participation of students in comparison to schools.

All necessary precautions including social distancing norms, thermal screening and other safety measures are being put in place by colleges and schools since the announcement of their re-opening earlier this month.

The state government has decided to welcome students when schools reopen from January 11 across the state. The government has assigned the responsibility of organizing the programmes in as many as 21 districts to various ministers.

The government could not hold Praveshotsav due to the Covid crisis in 2020-21 academic year, and thus decided to do so on Monday. Students are welcomed under the programme to encourage them to study.

Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama and energy minister Saurabh Patel will welcome students in Gandhinagar district. State home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja and revenue minister Kaushik Patel will participate in a welcome programme in Ahmedabad.

More than 17 lakh students are enrolled in Class X and Class XII courses and a large number of them will be going back to schools from Monday. While attendance is not compulsory, the state government said recently that online studies will continue according to Centre’s guidelines.

The state government had earlier announced resuming classroom studies from November 23, but later rolled back its decision following a spike in Covid-19 cases. As a result, many schools and colleges had already begun the work of reopening including sanitization of premises and social distancing measures in classrooms.

Coaching classes must be given permission to open. Exams practice is very important for board exams. Online conduction of exams is very difficult. Many teachers and students are under depression.

In all, there are about 20,000 schools in the state that are expected to reopen from Monday.

Gujarat education department changes admission criteria for class 1 in state

Only a child who has attained six years of age will be admitted to class 1 from the year 2023-24 onwards. The education department has come up with a notification regarding the same. The government has decided to implement the rule from 2023-24 onwards so that students who are at present studying in nursery and kindergarten sections are not inconvenienced.
Gujarat education department changes admission criteria for class 1 in state

For the year 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23, children upto the age of five can be admitted to class 1. The notification states that a child should have completed six years in June to be eligible for class 1 admission from the year 2023-24.

It should be noted that under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, children between the age of 6 and 14 years have to be provided free and compulsory education. The Gujarat government’s decision to allow those younger than six years to class 1 was in conflict with the Act and it had raised concerns in several quarters.

An association of schools and a private school have approached the Gujarat High Court challenging the Gujarat government's direction to the latter to admit children under the age of 6 in Class 1 under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The petition comes after the state education department directed Udgam School to admit 33 children, who have not completed six years as on June 1, to Class 1. It was also directed to admit another child of more than 10 years in the same class. The school said that it had confirmed admission of 15 other students allotted to it under RTE in Class 1.

In the petition, Udgam stated that as per the RTE Act, a child must have completed six years before June 1 to get admission in Class 1.

It also challenged the validity of Rule 3 (1) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2012, of the Gujarat government which states that an elementary school would not normally admit a child who has not completed six years on the date of admission, but adds that a child desirous to be admitted on completion of five years of age shall be admitted.

The petition also challenged validity of Clause 6 (5) of a Gujarat government resolution dated April 4, 2018, which states that for admission in Class 1, the child should have completed five years and should be less than 7 years on June 1.

THE ACT
The petition comes after the state education department directed Udgam School to admit 33 children, who have not completed six years as on June 1, to Class 1. It was also directed to admit another child of more than 10 years in the same class.

Std 9 To 12 Students : GSHSEB Declared Revised Curriculum

GSHSEB Declared Revised Curriculum For Std 9 To 12 Students, Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) decided to reduce the syllabus for Classes 9 to 12 by 30% for the academic year 2020-21 considering the ongoing coronavirus pandemic situation. Besides, GSEB 10th exams 2021 and GSEB 12th exams 2021 will be held on May 21 and for class 9 and 11 exams will be conducted in the month of June next year. The decision was taken keeping in mind the course load on the students.

Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama informed, “Instructions have been given to the board to start work on curriculum reduction. Suggestions from subject matter experts will be sought, followed by a decision on what is left and what to maintain.

Std 9 To 12 Students : GSHSEB Declared Revised Curriculum

The board is certain to maintain what is required for the students of the next class. The Chairman of the Board said, “A decision on the revised course will be taken soon with the advice of the State Government. Given the intolerance of students dropping out of the curriculum, the rationalization of the courses has to be done keeping in mind that these are the same students who are going to sit for the national entrance exams in the coming months. Therefore, our effort will be to ensure that students do not lose anything that is important. ”

According to GSHSEB, the education department conducted various meetings regarding the same on July 23, August 20 and September 11. Opinions from educationists were also sought on the matter. Later, on September 29, a meeting held in the presence of Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama following which the decision to rationalise the syllabus was taken.

According to sources, earlier, the students and parents made a representation, demanding that the syllabus be rationalised which eventually led to the discussion and the decision to reduce approximately 30% of the syllabus. This means that the exam papers will not have questions from this 30% portion. The decision was taken so that studies are less stressful for students and they can prepare well for board exams, said, officials.

However, in order to help students retain all core concepts that will help them prepare for competitive exams, this particular 30% portion of the syllabus will be taught by the teachers. The Gujarat Board or GSHSEB is working on the lines of the CBSE Board to reduce the syllabus for classes 9 to 12 – the CBSE syllabus has been reduced by 30%, which includes much needed subjects for students.

The topics constituting the 30% portion to be reduced will be sent to district education officers who will inform schools about the same. Additionally, it will also be uploaded on the board’s official website.
