The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is one of the flagship housing schemes of the Government of India, launched on June 25, 2015. Its mission is simple yet ambitious — “Housing for All” — providing affordable homes to economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG) across both urban and rural India.
The scheme is a continuation of the earlier Indira Awas Yojana (1985), which was renamed and expanded in 2015 to cover a broader range of beneficiaries and introduce modern housing solutions.
Objective of PM Awas Yojana 2025
The primary goal of PMAY 2025 is to ensure permanent housing for India’s underprivileged citizens, offering financial assistance for the construction or purchase of homes.
- ₹1,20,000 – for constructing houses in plain areas.
- ₹1,30,000 – for constructing houses in hilly, remote, or difficult terrains (due to higher construction costs).
The PMAY 2024–2025 plan aims to provide secure housing and improve the quality of life for disadvantaged families, with benefits available until December 31, 2024. The government has already sanctioned the construction of 1.22 crore houses under this scheme.
